Newsletters 2016

South West of England Aberdeen Angus Club.
Newsletter October 2016.
Hello everyone, just a quick newsletter to touch base and to keep you up to speed with what is happening over the next few weeks.
DINNER AND HERD COMPETITION/SHOWING POINTS AWARDS: - November 12th at the Devon Hotel, Matford. Final numbers needed for the Dinner please by November 5th. £20 per ticket. Contact me on 07970 793838 or email allaburyangus@aol.com
BEEF SOUTH WEST: -9th November 2016 at Westpoint, Exeter. The Club will be having a stand there-please pop along and see us and have a chat and join us for some light refreshments! There will be a show of pedigree Angus calves as well as commercials. Plenty of trade stands to view too.  Look forward to seeing you all.
CLUB CALF SHOW 21ST DECEMBER AT SEDGEMOOR LIVESTOCK CENTRE: - We are looking forward to resurrecting the Club calf show this year with help from all at Greenslade, Taylor and Hunt. There will be classes for calves born in 2016. There will also be classes for novices who have never shown before and young handler classes. There will be a demonstration on how to prepare your calf. The café will be open. Calves must be pre movement tested and you may arrive at the market from 12 noon the day before. Local accommodation is available. Schedule will follow shortly. We are in danger of losing our breed classes at many of the shows so this is a great opportunity to get your calves halter broken ready to show in the future-or even to prepare for sale. We are also looking for sponsorship please -if you would like to sponsor a class please get in touch with me. There is also the opportunity to present your rosettes in the ring to the winners! We are also trying to organise a social event the night before even if it is only a few drinks and nibbles.
AGM 2017: - provisional date of March 25th. To be held at the Devon Hotel, Matford. We are hoping Johnny Mackay the chief executive will be paying us another visit with the Aberdeen Angus roadshow-promotion of the breed. Plus we are in possession of the remaining items left to us by Mary Smallwood and these will be auctioned then.
HERD WALKS: - are in progress for next year and we are hoping to be holding one or two in the summer.
WORLD FORUM/NATIONAL SHOW: - As you are all aware the UK are the host for the World Forum next year. The National show will be held at Three Counties show On June 15th with judging on the Friday pm and the championships on the Saturday morning. As a club we have decided to subsidise a trip to Malvern to watch the judging and to meet some of the delegates that will be attending the show. Provisionally we are looking at travelling up on the Friday morning arriving at the show at lunchtime, watch the judging in the afternoon, travel locally on the coach to overnight accommodation and back into the show ground on Saturday morning to watch the championship judging and the interbreed. There will then be a lunch held with the delegates before leaving on the coach to travel back. As you can imagine this is going to take quite a lot of organising and I request that you register your interest with me by the end of November please in order for me to make some arrangements. This will very much be a subsidised trip. For me to determine costs I need to know numbers of interested parties.
I’d like to pass on a huge thank you to Colin and Joan Hutchings and family for putting on our most recent herd walk. Sadly I was unable to attend but I understand a wonderful display of cattle and food was put on and everyone enjoyed themselves very much. If you took any photos on the visit that you are happy to let us use for the website please could you let me know.
SUBSCRIPTIONS: - Yes that time of year again! Enclosed is a membership form for next year, if you could return to me as soon as possible please I would be grateful.
WEBSITE: - You will have all noticed that the website has had a revamp and isn’t it looking fantastic? Thank you Nick Bersey for all the hard work you put in behind the scenes.
Well that’s all from me, I shall look forward to seeing you all soon!

Newsletter August 2016.
Well it seems like a while since I typed the last newsletter! We have lots to update you on so I will stop rambling and get started!!
Herd Competition-we have great entries this time spread out over a very vast area! I’m sure our judge Charlie Maclean is going to enjoy seeing our wonderful cattle and wonderful countryside! He will be in touch with you all shortly-the plan is the judging will take place the last week of September. Time is going to be very tight due to the miles that need to be covered so I respectfully ask that you do not invite him in for breakfast or roast-I’m sure a drink on the go or a small snack will be sufficient. The cattle need to be as close to the farm buildings as possible and to be just the pedigree Angus, there will not be time to cover large acreage sadly. Your co-operation in this would be appreciated so everyone entered can have the same time and attention as the other. You will also need to be flexible; the traffic this year has not been easy and continues to cause chaos in all the counties! There will also be prizes for the best bull and heifer calf born in 2016, best group of in calf heifers and a prize for the best stock bull with 2016 calves on the ground.
Dinner (and Herd Competition results!) has been booked at the Devon Hotel, Matford, Exeter for the 12th November 2016. We will be having our usual roast and a choice of sweets.  Tickets will be £20 per head and can be booked and paid with me please-07970 793838 or pop me an email

Beef South West is taking place at Westpoint on the 9th November 2016. The club will be having a promotional stand, if anyone has any commercial cross bred steers or heifers by an Angus sire that we could use for the stand we would be grateful. They would have to be pre movement tested but the club will cover the cost of that. There is also a young bull of the year competition and we are looking for 2 bulls born in 2015 to represent the Angus section. Again any nominations to me ASAP please.
Kingsbrompton Herd Walk-by kind permission of Colin Hutchings and family, this will take place on the 25th September. A chance to see some great cattle in a lovely setting! The walk will start at 12 noon with tea and coffee and then we will get chance to see the cattle and come back for some more refreshments! Numbers to me please ASAP for catering and at the very latest the week before.
Dispersal sale of the Rull Herd-this is taking place on the 6th September 2016 at Paulsland House. Sale of cattle, semen, machinery and ponies for club members Ed and Claire Jones. More details will be posted on our website and facebook page shortly and more information from Stags auctioneers.
Calf shows-The Cornwall Pedigree calf show will take place at Wadebridge on Sunday 6Th November. We will potentially run a club show if interest is shown which will be held at Sedgemoor but date to be confirmed. This would be run in conjunction with Greenslade Taylor Hunt own show and would be a 2 day event, allowing us to take calves in the night before. Please register any interest urgently to me please.

The shows have been reasonably well attended this year although cattle numbers are down but quality wasn’t! Congratulations to all of our club members who have done well. The Cornish members enjoyed a cream tea at Royal Cornwall and we are looking to extend the catering at Devon County next year.
Finally-a plea from our wonderful website updater! Nick is looking for some photographs of Angus cattle out in the fields with nice backgrounds etc. Please if you have any or are a budding photographer and are happy for us to use your photo to promote the cattle on the website then let me know! Also, the cattle for sale list can only be as up to date as you inform with me with information. It’s there to be used and the first port of call for so many therefore please feel free to contact me with any information.
I shall look forward to seeing you all very soon and best of luck to all those competing in the Herd Competition.

Newsletter May 2016.
Welcome to the spring newsletter for 2016! Although I use the term spring loosely, we seem to have had plenty of April showers. Hopefully the weather will stay warmer and I’m sure the Cattle are enjoying some turnout after another long winter!
I’m sure you will all agree with me that the AGM and Dinner was a fantastic success; it was great to have our new Chief Executive come down to introduce himself. Johnny was surprised by how large a Club we are and how positive we are and he wishes us well for the future.  I am sure after his speech we are all positive he will take our Society onto the next level and as a Club we wish him all the best. Not a mean feat to have to take over from Ron but I feel we have a positive future! I’d like to also express thanks to Paul Westaway who is (as well as Mark Pilcher)  representing us on Council for bringing us up to speed with what’s happening next year for the World Forum. We welcomed Richard Tully onto the Club Committee and officers stayed the same, me as Secretary, Big Rich as Chair (Richard Ashenden!) and Gill Quinn as Treasurer.
Herd Walk-This Sunday 15th May at Nanterrow by kind permission of Andrew and Janet Reynolds. Final call now for numbers to me please, 07970 793838 or email
allaburyangus@aol.com <mailto:allaburyangus@aol.com> Great opportunity to view some fabulous cattle in a lovely part of Cornwall. We will also be paying a visit to the wonderful Kingsbrompton Herd later in the year, more details in a future newsletter.
Shows-we will have stands at Devon County and Bath and West, please come along for some light refreshments! Any donations of cakes or buns greatly received! Although we are not having a stand at Royal Cornwall, Andrew and Janet Reynolds are very kindly putting on a cream tea after judging on the Thursday. All members welcome and various Club literature will be available to hand out.

Youth Development Days-
22nd May at Nanterow, near Hayle and 10th July at North Alfordon, Okehampton. More info please contact Gayle Bersey 07792 777889. Don’t forget it is open to all young people up to 25; you don’t have to be an Angus breeder!

Herd Competition
-Entry form is attached for this year’s bi-annual competition. If you could please get entries back to me at the very latest 30th June 2016. The competition will take place at the end of September and the prize winners announced at a Dinner which will be held in either November or December, date to be confirmed.

Badger Culls in the South West -
I’m sure I don’t need to tell everyone how devastating Bovine TB is. Pilot culls will hopefully soon be starting in South Devon. I hope all members of the Club will support those affected in the Cull area and beyond and that one day the South West can look forward to a Bovine TB Free area.
I am pleased to announce that we will be making a donation to Devon Air Ambulance (hopefully at Devon County Show) for £800 following our auction last year. A very worthy cause and I’m sure Mary would be delighted.
I am shortly due to undergo major surgery and will be off for a while; during this time if you have any urgent Club matters could you contact Richard or any of the Club Committee. I will be able to respond to a few queries via telephone and email should the need arise.
I look forward to seeing you all soon!
