Newsletters 2015

South West of England Aberdeen Angus Club.
Newsletter Autumn / Winter 2015

Apologies for another Newsletter so soon but we have lots coming up and I wanted to get the information out to you all quickly. This will be the last newsletter of the year-the evenings are closing in and winter is just around the corner meaning another year is nearly over.
Subscriptions- As you will see we have decided to send out an invoice with this newsletter for 2016 subscriptions which will remain at £20. It’s easy to put the newsletter to one side and think I will pay that later (I’ve been there done that!) so we as a Committee agreed this is the way forward. For those of you who pay by standing order but have not yet amended it from the previous £15 you will find an invoice for the extra £5. Subscriptions can be sent to me Lisa Frain at Tregadillett House, Tregadilett, Launceston, Cornwall PL15 7EX.
A newsletter has been sent to everyone who is currently on the club website who may not necessarily still be a club member so I hope we can welcome some of you back! There will be a revamp of the member’s area on the website after 1st March 2016 to allow current members to continue to utilise the site to sell cattle etc.
Future Events:-
Herd Walk, 18th October 12 noon, Trewavas. Looking like its going to be a great afternoon! Final numbers to me please urgently on 07970 793838 or email allaburyangus@aol.com   please don’t miss this opportunity to see some wonderful angus cattle.

Dinner: -28th November, Devon Hotel, Matford, Exeter. This is an evening not to be missed! James Morrish has kindly agreed to be our after dinner speaker. Most of you will know him through his role at Kivell’s auctioneers. His dulcet tones are also heard at the cattle rings at Royal Cornwall show. He will also be auctioning off our items which are detailed later in the newsletter. Tickets are £20. This includes roast beef, a choice of desserts and tea/coffee/Bookings to be made to me please by the end of October on 07970 793838 or email
allaburyangus@aol.com  Accommodation is available at the Hotel £85 Bed and Breakfast based on 2 sharing, £70 for single. Bookings can be made direct with the hotel and don’t forget to quote the club to get your special rate. Please arrive at 7pm for a 7.30pm dinner.

Calf show: - Sadly due to lack of interest and entries the club will not be holding a show this year.

2016 Herd Competition: - Planning is underway, keep your eyes peeled after Christmas for more information!

Points Trophies-NEW! :-The Committee have decided that we needed to do something with the trophies that we have been donated and not using! Therefore we are giving a trophy to the best heifer, best cow and best bull using a points system based on wins and placings at shows in the south west that have held dedicated Aberdeen Angus classes. These results have been added up, the winners decided and will be announced at the dinner. Come along and see if your animal is the title holder!
Young person award: - Earlier in the year it was decided to award another trophy in Mary Smallwood’s memory. As you well know Mary was so supportive of all our young people. The rose bowl will be known as the Young Person award. The Committee will decide on a yearly basis to which purpose this will be presented under and to whom for a South west member under 25. However you as members will be given chance every year to put forward names and reasons why they should win.
This year it has been decided to award it to the highest scoring YDP competitor from the south west. This honour falls to Jake Sayer of the Denman’s herd. Well done Jake! This trophy will also be presented at the dinner.
Auction of Angus related items:-
Attached are photos of the items that we have been left by Mary. They will be auctioned at the dinner in November. Proceeds raised will be donated to a charity, yet to be decided. For those not attending, sealed bids are welcome to be sent to me beforehand. Telephone bids are not going to be available on the night. As you will see there are some exceptional once in a lifetime pieces that can be purchased. Sealed bids can be sent to me at Tregadillett House, Tregadillett, Launceston, Cornwal PL15 7EX
New Chair and Secretary! :- As you all know the Club sadly lost Julie who was secretary earlier in the year. I have been muddling through as both Chair and Secretary for a few months. At our last Committee meeting I suggested that Richard Ashenden (Big Rich to all of us!) step up from Vice Chair to Chair and I take up the position of secretary. Rich very kindly agreed and Andrew Reynolds from the Nanterrow herd, our new committee member was happy to take on the vice chair position.
So please any matters regarding the club can be liased though with me and I will endeavour to respond as quickly as I can. Hopefully with this new structure in place we will be able to do so much more for the club including extra events etc.
So the last word from me is-subs-are way overdue, pay now!! And I look forward to seeing you all at the Herd walk and the dinner.
Lisa

Newsletter: Summer 2015

Well the newsletter is headed summer 2015!! What summer I hear you say? As I type, the evenings are drawing in and there is definitely a chill in the air.
Our AGM earlier in the year was attended by some 20 members. We said a sad farewell to Ruth Gay from the Committee. As you know Ruth used to organise our dinners at Tiverton. Ruth received a bouquet of flowers as a token of our appreciation for all she did for the Club. New members on the committee are Andrew Reynolds (Nanterrow) and Megan Denning (Temple) both of whom we are looking forward to working with.
One thing that was raised at the Committee meeting after the AGM was if any Club Member has any concern within the Club would they please raise it with either the Chair (me!) Or a member of the Committee as it was felt that there is enough pressure already on the Secretary.
The summer show season has nearly finished. Whilst sadly entries have been down on numbers across the south west for the one day shows, the three county shows appeared to buck the trend and were well supported. Paul and Kirsty Westaway sneaked down from West Mercia and snatched the honours back to Gloucester from Devon County and Royal Cornwall. Andrew and Judith Denning flew the flag for our Club by taking the championship at their local show the Royal Bath and West.
The Club donated a trophy to the Angus Champion at North Devon Show this year in honour of our valued and long standing member Mary Smallwood. This was taken home by Dudley and Stuart Luxton with their senior bull Ballathie Emblem.
Forthcoming Events: -
A date not to be missed- Sunday 18th October at 12 noon, herd walk at the Trewavas Herd by kind permission of Michael and Jenny Collins. Trewavas Farm, Wendron, Helston. TR13 0NR. Refreshments will be provided. Michael and Jenny have been the large herd competition winners 4 times in the last ten years-bearing in mind this is run bi-annually, what an achievement! A great opportunity to see some wonderful cattle in a lovely part of Cornwall. Numbers please to me on 07970 793838 or email allaburyangus@aol.com <mailto:allaburyangus@aol.com>

28th November 2015-Dinner and Auction at the Devon Hotel, Matford, Exeter, EX2 8XU this promises to be another great evening for the club. We have been donated some wonderful Angus items by the late Mary Smallwood and we have decided to put them up for auction. All of these items are Angus related and some are very rare. James Morrish from Kivells auctioneers has kindly agreed to do an after dinner speech and to auction the items. Tickets are £20 per head and need to be booked with me, details as above.
October 2nd sees a reduction sale at Carlisle from the Rull Herd-check out the website for more details.

Last but not least, we sadly bid farewell to Julie our secretary earlier in the summer. Due to work commitments Julie felt she did not have the time to give that the Club needed. Therefore at the moment I am acting as both Chair and Secretary. Any volunteers for the post (there is a small remuneration at the end of each year) would be gratefully received!
The cattle for sale page is being updated all the time (thank you Nick Bersey!) so please utilise it to your advantage-it is the first point of call for so many buyers and where I send them when they get in touch.
See you all at the herd walk!
Lisa

Newsletter: Spring 2015

Apologies for a late newsletter, I started a full time job in November and combined with the farm life has been extremely manic, with training course etc. etc.! Hopefully now life will be a little more structured so I can resume my role as secretary a little better.
Summer shows… Fast approaching!
We will have our usual stand at Devon County and Bath & West where it would good to have some extra helpers to man the stand. I will have some tickets to get in to the show for anyone willing to help out.
Herd Walks…We are hoping to go and visit Tony Foster & Rob Bishop for an away visit early July, more details to follow.
AGM… It’s that time of year again, this year it’s being held back at the Pavilion in North Curry on Tuesday 21st April 2015 @ 7:45 for 8pm start. We felt Tiverton was a little expensive last year so opted to move this year, could members who plan on attending please bring a plate of something to eat i.e. sandwiches sausage rolls, cake etc. Also we have 2 members due to stand down from the committee which are Ruth Gay and Stephen Cook. Ruth has asked that she does not stand again and feels it’s time to bring to someone bring some new members on to the committee. We thank Ruth hugely for all she has done over the years for our club, it’s greatly appreciated. So we are looking for two members to join our committee... its open to all who are part of our club and wish to take an interest in moving the club forward.  If you have any questions regarding what is involved etc. please do ask.
SUBSCRPTIONS!!!
These are now due so please send a cheque £20, also we still have 16 people paying £15 via BACS these need amending for next year and the difference paying please.
Website…
If anyone wants to update their Cattle for sale advert please let me know and I will change it, it’s good for people who are looking for cattle to have an up to date list.

The dinner at Exeter was a great success, Angus gave a very interesting talk on his Herd history. The food was excellent.
Start Ilsington herd of pedigree AA in 2012, have imported 2 red angus girls june 2013, one being incalf and produced a heifer the other being a weaned calf at the time. Both to be AI'ed this spring and all three to be flushed next spring
I am been heavily involved in dexters from tha age of 11 until last year, I am still a judge for the breed, also British Blonde until last year, also still a judge. I have shown them and commercials for many years with great success.
I hqve now turned my attention to Angus, having fallen in love with our Red Angus bull we bought to run on heifers and so my addiction was created!
I will do my up most to follow in Gayle's footsteps but she will be a hard act to follow! My details are available on angus website and in a newsletter that will be out soon.... I look forward to meeting everyone in the coming months
Julie
